Is Withdrawal An Effective Method of Birth Control?

The pull-out method has been dubbed "pull and pray" and compared to Russian roulette. But is withdrawal really that risky?

We're passionate about helping people make informed choices about their health. We don't believe there's one perfect form of birth control - it's all about weighing the pros and cons and deciding what makes sense for you. Unfortunately, when it comes to contraception, there's a lot of misinformation floating around. As a result, people are often left to make a choice without all the pieces of the puzzle. We're on a mission to change that!

In today's episode of Red Tent Sisters TV we're talking about withdrawal, a birth control method that has unfortunately developed a reputation for being an "irresponsible" choice despite its popularity. A 2014 study of 4634 women in the US found that 13% of participants reported that withdrawal was the most effective method used in the last 30 days, but 33% had used withdrawal at least once (indicating that coitus interruptus is often used in conjunction with other methods of birth control).

In this five minute video we discuss:

  1. The difference between perfect use and typical use efficacy rates

  2. Why there’s a bigger discrepancy between typical and perfect use for withdrawal than with other methods

  3. Advantages of using withdrawal

  4. The importance of communication

  5. When withdrawal might not be a good contraceptive option

If today's video is inspiring you to consider different contraceptive options, we have lots of resources! Check out the birth control section of our website or download our free Ditch The Pill report below.
